My top 5 modern Filipino heroes

Have you noticed? More and more Filipinos are being recognized as heroes despite not having risked their lives like guys like Jose Rizal and Ninoy Aquino. These modern Filipino are recognized not for their martyrdom but for their passion and contribution in nurturing and teaching their fellow Filipinos especially the less privileged.

Here is my top 5 modern Filipino heroes:

1. Antonio P. Meloto. He is the founder of the anti-poverty and nation-building charismatic movement Gawad Kalinga (GK). Through GK, Meloto has inspired many Filipinos to rise and to work for the eradication of poverty through a pioneering movement of volunteerism. Because of this, he became the first Gawad Haydee Yorac Awardee.

2 and 3. Dr. Christopher and Ma. Victoria Bernido. The Bernidos who were professors at the UP National Institute of Physics left the UP Campus and established the Research Center for Theoretical Physics in Jagna, Bohol, a sea-side fourth class municipality. Because of this, the couple were given the third Gawad Haydee Yorac award.

4. Efren Penaflorida. This young man started a "pushcart classroom" in Cavite in order to bring education to poor children and keep them away from gang membership and gang wars. Because of his passion, he was chosen as the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year which he received with great humility.

5. Joey Concepcion. Born to a well-to-do family, he has extended himself from just being successful businessman to being a prime mover in teaching and encouraging entrepreneurship to Filipinos through the Go Negosyo movement. The success of Go Negosyo, both in terms of support and impact, is but an award in itself and a recognition of Mr. Concepcion's passion for encouraging entrepreneurship.

Negoskwela's January 2010 sched

It is the season for New Year's resolutions, but do you know what is better than a perfect New Year's resolution? Resolving to do something is great, but doing what you resolved to do is really better. And one good thing to do at the start of the year is learn a new skill.

And where do we learn new skills? Institutions like Negoskwela and many other seminar providers in the Philippines have the answer. They offer a wide range of courses that you could choose from. For example, below is Negoskwela's schedule for January 2010.

By the way, here is a tip. Negoskwela offers discounts for early registrations, and for Senior Citizens and OCWs and OFWs. They also offer discounts for your succeeding courses, quite a good way to encourage continuous learning.

Urine Tests vs. Blood Tests: Paquiao vs. Mayweather

I guess you have already read that what was hoped to be the greatest boxing fight of the decade scheduled next year between Manny Paquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. will not push through. Instead, what we can expect is a long arduous legal battle in the form of oral defamation charge filed by Manny Paquiao against just about everybody in the Mayweather camp.

The cause, Mayweather camp has been insisting for Olympic-style blood tests for Paquiao vs. Mayweather fight and has been suggesting that it is highly suspicious that Paquiao is not willing to agree, not too close to the fight anyway. Most quotable of course was Oscar Dela Hoya's comment that Manny's punches felt very much like Mosley's and Vargas' punches, two boxers who have been linked to performance enhancing drugs.

There is a heated debate on the net between both camps but what is clear is that there is some science to be learned. In fact, when I first read the news reports about the controversy I too felt that Manny could be hiding something. But after reading further, there is in fact a big argument to the contrary.

There are actually experts who have written that blood tests are indirect tests only and would still require confirmatory urine testing. In fact, the article stated that the only use of blood tests is that they are cheaper and are good as preliminary test.

Read the "EPO Drug Testing Q&A" here.

Knowing more about the COMELEC

Before we get into heat of the 2010 national and local automated elections, it is but proper that we know exactly who will be administering it. The Commission on Elections or COMELEC has the enviable task of ensuring that we have properly elected leaders who will take their posts on June 30, 2010.

A search for easy-to-read information on the COMELEC led me to this paper entitled "The COMELEC and the 2010 Elections: What You Need to Know". I hope this will help us prepare for the sacred exercise of our right to suffrage come May 2010.

I will write next about the automated elections and what we need to know. I mean other than "may bilog, may bilog, na hugis itlog".
